Investigating the Toll of the Rising Temperatures

21 Unexplained Deaths in Kota, Rajasthan, Amid Heat Wave
Rajasthan is in grip of severe heatwave

Rajasthan is currently facing a severe heat wave, with temperatures soaring to 47 degrees Celsius in eleven cities. In Jaipur, the capital city, temperatures have reached an eight-year high of over 46 degrees. Amidst these scorching conditions, there has been a mysterious increase in sudden deaths across the state.

In Kota, 21 abandoned bodies have been discovered in just the past 48 hours. These bodies were found in various places such as footpaths, under bridges, near railway tracks, and outside temples. An NGO, Karma Yogi Seva Sansthan, has been called upon to handle the last rites of these unidentified bodies. Raja Ram, the president of the NGO, has noted that he has never received so many calls from the police in his 24 years of service. He believes the extreme heat is a contributing factor.

The government, however, is not officially linking these deaths to the heat wave. The state health department has reported only one death due to heat stroke. On the ground, though, there are indications that the actual number is higher. Some of the deaths might be due to other health conditions worsened by the heat.

State health officials have asked hospitals to be ready for more heat stroke patients. Special wards with blocks of ice have been set up to treat those affected. Yet, State health minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar maintains that most of the vulnerable individuals are alcoholics, drug addicts, or daily wage workers.

Meanwhile, State minister for disaster relief Kirori Lal Meena suggests that as many as six people might have died due to the "loo," a local term for hot winds. He added that there is no provision for financial compensation for heat-related deaths.

There have also been reports of heat-related deaths in other parts of Rajasthan. In Bundi, temperatures have reached 47-48 degrees, and five deaths showing symptoms of heat stroke have been reported. A police constable and a BSF soldier have also died under circumstances that might be related to the heat.

So far, nearly 4,000 people in Rajasthan have been treated for heat stroke in government hospitals. Climate change is causing heat waves to become longer, more frequent, and more intense, making the situation even more severe.

India is no stranger to extreme summer temperatures, but the increasing intensity and frequency of these heat waves pose significant challenges for public health and safety.
