From Chubby Childhood to Clean Eating Crusader
For Kalra, this story starts long before the first packet of oats was sold. “I was always a fat kid,” he shares candidly. It was a long and deeply personal fitness journey that sparked the first flames of what would become GOAT Life. Over time, Yash lost 20 kilos, and his family collectively shed over 140 kilos. Amidst all the diet changes, workouts, and lifestyle switches, one constant remained: oatmeal.
And not just once in a while—Kalra has consumed over 2,100 bowls of oats in the last seven years. That kind of loyalty isn’t just admirable, it’s inspiring—and clearly a spark for innovation.
But there was one major hiccup in his oatmeal obsession: taste. While oats were undoubtedly healthy, the available options were either too bland or too tedious to make. “Healthy food often doesn’t taste good enough to keep people coming back,” Kalra explains. And this was the exact problem he set out to solve.
Building GOAT Life from Scratch
In 2022, Yash decided to transform his breakfast obsession into a business idea. He started small—with just Rs 5 lakh in capital, Rs 3 lakh from his own savings and another Rs 2 lakh as a loan from the Government of Rajasthan. From a self-built manufacturing unit in Kota, GOAT Life (initially named GoOAT) was born.
The concept? Simple. A ready-to-consume oatmeal-based product that didn’t taste like cardboard. GOAT’s oats could be eaten or even drunk like a shake, ready in just 30 seconds. Each serving packed a powerful punch, 17 to 27 grams of protein, no refined sugar or preservatives, and six flavors that ranged from mocha to mango and choconut. Tiramisu and cookies & cream are next on the menu.
These weren’t just products, they were a culmination of years of personal experience, trial-and-error, and a deep understanding of what health-conscious, busy people actually wanted.
The Power of Real Conversations
Unlike many D2C brands that start online, Kalra took the old-school route first. He set up over 85 pop-up stalls in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, personally meeting over 2,000 people to test and refine his product. And the response was overwhelming. “After tasting the oats, 85% of people paid on the spot and bought it,” he recalls with pride.
This ground-up approach gave the brand something invaluable—real, unfiltered feedback. From taste preferences to texture tweaks, every detail was refined based on what actual customers said. It also created a core group of early fans who believed in the product and spread the word.
Why Oats? Why Now?
Oats have long been viewed as the underdog in India’s breakfast scene. Too Western, too bland, too unfamiliar. But that’s changing.
India’s breakfast cereal market is expected to grow at a steady 8.2% CAGR in the coming years. Consumers, especially in metros and Tier-2 cities, are beginning to prioritize convenience, nutrition, and taste in equal measure. GOAT Life is perfectly poised to ride this wave, with products that meet all three demands.
What sets GOAT Life apart is not just the nutritional value, but the palatability. With six unique, indulgent flavors and more on the way, the brand’s oats don’t feel like a compromise. They feel like comfort food—with benefits.
A New Name, A Bigger Vision
Recently, the brand transitioned from “GoOAT” to “GOAT Life.” The name is a clever play—not only does it still nod to oats, but it also embraces the popular acronym “GOAT” (Greatest Of All Time). More importantly, it reflects a broader mission.
“We’re not just an oatmeal brand anymore,” Kalra emphasizes. “Our vision is to make healthy eating simple, accessible, and most importantly, delicious.”
GOAT Life is now eyeing expansion into adjacent categories like protein cookies, protein powders, and maybe even cloud kitchens that serve healthy meals on-demand. It’s all part of a larger ecosystem the brand hopes to create, where eating well isn’t a chore, it’s a joy.
Scaling Up Without Selling Out
What makes GOAT Life’s approach unique is how tightly controlled and hands-on their operations are. From sourcing ingredients to manufacturing and packing orders for Amazon or their website, everything happens in-house at their Kota facility.
This allows them to produce in smaller batches, ensuring freshness, maintaining high quality standards, and staying agile when it comes to experimenting with new products. As Kalra puts it, “Running our own production helps us maintain consistency and gives us the flexibility to try new things quickly.”
The brand currently generates around Rs 10 lakh in monthly revenue and has recently gone live on platforms like Amazon and its own D2C website. And excitingly, it’s set to launch on Swiggy Instamart soon—making its products even more accessible for urban consumers on the go.
Investors Take Notice
GOAT Life’s impressive early growth and Kalra’s determined hustle haven’t gone unnoticed. Earlier this year, the company raised a pre-seed round led by D2C Insider Super Angels. Notable investors like Deep and Mohit Bajaj (of Sirona), Dhruv Kohli (Boba Bhai), Akash Gupta (Zypp Electric), and Vikram Ahuja (HomeGuru) joined the round.
The funds are being channeled into scaling manufacturing, expanding distribution, and refining the product lineup. “We’re trying a few new formats like cloud kitchens and retail experiments—to see what clicks,” Kalra adds.
